After living in Zambia and other African countries, Henning Mankell was invited to run the Teatro Avenida in the capital of Mocambique, Maputo. Since his arrival in 1986 he is spending at least half the year in Maputo working with the theatre and writing.
At present Henning Mankell's function at the theatre is that of an artistic leader, while one of his dearest friends, Manuela Soeiro, who founded the small theatre company in 1984, is running it.
